As I build up this blog, you’ll find me “banking” a number of posts with basic information for romance writers pursuing eBooks as a publishing format. I’ll be adding posts highlighting eBook publishers and general websites for eBook writers (not always genre specific), plus links to publications and organizations assisting those writing in electronic format.
One of those organizations is RWA Chapter #200. ESPAN, aka Electronic and Small Press Author’s Network, is an online chapter of the Romance Writers of America devoted to supporting writers working in formats outside mainstream New York publishing, chiefly eBooks and small press books.
Overall at this time, RWA doesn’t have the best rep in terms of being supportive toward its members who are also eBook writers. It’s been pointed out that eBook authors exist in a sort of publishing purgatory with the RWA. The organization considers them published “enough” to exclude them from competing in the Golden Heart Awards for unpublished writers, thus denying them the opportunity to bring their work to the attention of New York agents and editors through that competition. For all other purposes, however, these same authors are considered unpublished, and as a consequence are ineligible for the RITA awards for published authors.
Still, RWA does have it’s special interest chapter, ESPAN, where eBook authors are welcomed. The chapter has a PAN liaison and advocates for its members interests with the RWA. It also provides a place where authors can connect online, attend workshops targeted to their needs, and promote their work. Any member of RWA, can also become a member of ESPAN by paying annual dues of $20 for a general membership, or $15 for an associate membership.
